upper main street buildings 1910-1911
Christmas News cover
Drawing by Ellis -----
This beautiful illustration shows the Templeton Building, Bishops Building, Deseret News Building, Vermont Building, Deseret Gymnasium, Salt Lake Temple, Hotel Utah, and the Pioneer Monument. Of the eight structures shown, only the Hotel Utah, Pioneer Monument, and Salt Lake Temple are still standing. I was unfortunately not able to find any information about the artist of this piece. The following is a response by Ardis Parshall who had trouble posting the comment:
ReplyDelete"Ellis is almost certainly Frank Ellis, who contributed illustrations to all the Salt Lake and Ogden newspapers in the first 10 or 15 years of the century. I can't tell you much about him, but his name shows up frequently in the arts columns of the News and Trib from those years (nothing significant, just that he has won this award or designed that magazine cover.)
It's amazing that so many of those buildings, so substantially built and probably intended to last a very long time, should have disappeared in less than a century, some of them very much less.
Thanks again for the great info Ardis!
